Samuel Pepys Is A Cad!!!

Getting caught up on our man Pepys...

It beggars belief!!! I had to pry my jaw from the floor!

Start on the December 18th 1665 (in St Olave's church, no less) and read forward at least until December 20th. Do read the comments, our Pepys' fans are flabbergasted: http://www.pepysdiary.com/archive/1664/12/

And here I was looking for some cheery restoration Christmas stuff.

This is your reading assignment of the day.

UPDATE: Do read Christmas day and Boxing Day next. Twice to church whilst making excuses for the missing Missus, meanwhile taking in all the eye candy.

Just apalling!

Yes, Sammy-boy was quite the skirt-chaser and womanizer. He even went after his wife's "companion."

Not to mention the shiner...

He was a very naughty boy.

The Deptford of which he speaks (where he had a house) was a country village in his day. By the time I was born there (a few years later...) it was a working class slum relying on the docks for employment. There is a Pepys Road and a Pepys Estate (more working class slums, but put up in the 1960s to replace bombed out houses from WW2).

Even though his name is said Peeps, we had a Pepys House in my school which was traditionally pronounced Peppies. (The school was 250 years old when I went there, but it's become MUCH older in the intervening period - even more than I have).

Little did I know we had a Pepys connection, here.

And how about that sending his employee, Mr. Bagwell, on a fools errand from Bagwell's own home, so he can canoodle with Mrs. Bagwell? Some holiday spirit, eh?
